As per wikipedia "Potting soil, also known as potting mix or miracle soil, is a medium in which to grow plants, herbs and vegetables in a pot or other durable container." A good potting mix provides the plants with very good nutrition's which helps in the plant's growth.
The best general potting mix should have air space, nutrients, and good water retention. To have good air space and water retention we can use coir pith. For providing ample nutrition's we can use vermicompost or home made vegetable compost.
Coir Pith:
Coir pith or coco peat is a spongy material that binds the coconut fibre in the husk. It is an excellent soil conditioner and with its moisture retention qualities, coir pith is ideal for
growing vegetables in grow bags in our home garden.
Vermicompost:
The composting of organic food waste using earthworms creates a end product called Vermicompost. The vermicompost is a organic fertilizer which is widely used in organic farming. Compared to normal soils vermicompost contains more nutrition's which help in plant growth.
Mixture:
For a balanced potting soil we can mix the Coir Pith:Vermicompost:Red soil in the ratio of 2:2:1
